Starker uses a Larsen A
Larsens are really good and they're really not expensive, considering your instrument cost at least a thousand dollars (if it didn't, your cello will suck regardless of strings). Also, they're definitely not the brightest sounding strings out there. If you're going to buy Larsen strings, you should go ahead and buy the soloist edition. Larsen is known for its A and D strings, so you might be better off going for a brand known for its G and D strings, like Spirocore. But then again, Larsen just came out with a new set of lower strings that are supposed to be a lot better, but I've never tried them. Just FYI, I'm pretty sure Starker uses a Larsen A and Meneses uses the A and D.

Great sound
The Larsen D strings solved a lot of problems for me. Rich, quick response, great sound in upper positions, etc. I've been experimenting with several strings. You really get what you pay for.

Strong and clear
I have had real success with Larsen A and D, especially soloists. They may be a little extra bright when they get older, but ther've always been perfectly stable for me. Really strong and clear sound. I think you get what you pay for - a good string!
